Known for their keen sense of smell, and a mind sharp as a tack, dogs were reared in royal households for their hunting parties. Shown with a nobleman, this is a beautiful Saluki hound is elegant, muscular, with fashionably tinted ears. The painting was made in the early decades of the 17th century, in the Deccan, perhaps by Muhammad Ali, a follower of Farrukh Beg.

Closing the year and this year-long journey with a painting of the goddess of knowledge and music, Saraswati. This Deccani painting was commissioned by the aesthete emperor, Ibrahim Adil Shah II, and painted by his master artist Farrukh Husain, around 1604.
