Art356/359: Adoration of Christ

This is a circa 1630 painting made in Golconda, in the Deccan. The borders are opulent, and almost distracting from the central image!

Against a sky filled with gold swirling clouds, a pair of angels descend, carrying a crown and a garland. On the ground below baby Christ, with a spectacular and spiky halo, is being showered with gifts and looks of absolute devotion from Mary, the Magi, and another angle! The faces are borrowed from prints, or accounts, the dresses are a Deccani artist’s take on European clothing. The baby looks precocious, as he stretches across his cradle. The overall effect is eclectic, and of course, rather intriguing!
