Art365/263: Romantic Escape/ade

Who doesn't love a daring escape, especially if there are elephants invovled! A prince has arrived on an elephant in the middle of the night to whisk away his beloved, who seems to be held captive in a Mughal fort (judging by the sandstone walls and marble balcony). Their loyal attendents / friends are helping, holding flames and candles to light the lovers' path.

Made in the late 18th century, in an atelier familiar with Mughal painting, the painting has a profuse use of gold, but some details don't quite work. The elephant, beautifully ornamented, seems to float. The guy on a tree in the lower left corner is an oversized torso, and the women seem to be stock figures. Despite problems, the painting is charming, and rather well made!
