Art365/357: Miraj Malkauns

This folio depicts the Raga Malkos (or Malkauns) made in Kolhapur in the mid-eighteenth century and collected by the royals of Miraj (Junior) state.

While the iconography seems familiar - a prince listening to music- there is a distinct way in which faces are drawn. Figure to have a certain awkwardness in the posture, and the buildings also seem clumsy. The sky and foliage, however, are stylised and eclectic, and the painting has a brilliant sense of colour and drama.
