Art365/355: Pilgrimage Pata

Made in Sirohi in the early 19th century, this gorgeous textile is. convenient way to get all the “darshan” spots ticked. It shows the town of Shatrunjaya in Gujarat, a pilgrimage spot for the Jains, as a diagram. We can trace popular pilgrimage routes, important sites, and get a sense of the landscape. In this image, the centre is a temple dedicated to Adinath, built in the 13th century and follows pilgrims on different modes of transport.

A pilgrimage pata captures the spirit of the place, even if it isn’t to scale, and tells us more stories than an accurate map!
