This Bourne and Shepherd picture of Sawai Ram Singh shows him in a contemplative if a bit uncertain mood. This is so different from Sawai Ram Singh's self-portraits, where he always appears confident. The Maharaja, who knew this image would be circulated extensively, has posed with wearing his turban and a long coat, and he rests his hands of a book. The medal on his robe is a nod to the relationship Jaipur shared with the (English) crown. He also wears a garland of Rudraksha beads, which tells us he is Shaivite.
This image was in an album of pictures from India that the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, gave to his wife Alexandra on Christmas, procured from Albert Edward’s grand tour of India, made in 1875-76.
