Art365/39: Riyaz/ Ragamala

In this folio, two women are immersed in music. They're on a stripped carpet, in a verandah of a home that has towers on each side, and indicators of a garden beyond. The folio has sparse details, with attention focussed on the two musicians. They appear to be practicing- performing riyaz- with no audience, not even an attendant or birds listening. There is very little indication of the time -- the sky is a shade of dark blue, but no candles are lit, or placed around them, and the background is the neutral colour of paper.

As Ragamala illustrations go, the Karnati refers to Kannada or from/of the south. The Ragini gets depicted in sets from the Pahari schools with two musicians, one playing and the other keeping beat. Viewed by itself, the folio (made between 1730-40, in Bilaspur, )captures 'riyaz' a private and disciplined engagement with music.
